A congregation of about 50, including many who had come specially to remember Leonard Patrick, shared in a service led by Janet (deputising for David Francis) at which John preached on the text "I was glad when they said unto me: We will go into the House of the Lord".

An exact contemporary: John Betjeman

John Betjeman, originally uploaded by Old Man of Mow.

Sir John Betjeman CBE (28 August 1906–19 May 1984) was an English poet, writer and broadcaster who described himself in Who's Who as a "poet and hack". He was born to a middle-class family in Edwardian London. Although he failed his degree at Oxford University, his early ability in writing poetry and interest in architecture supported him throughout his life. Starting his career as a journalist, he ended it as British Poet Laureate and a much-loved figure on British television. [Wikipedia]

John led the service and David preached the sermon. David Thomas read the Gospel. We were entertained afterwards by the small local congregation which included Nellie Lawton and Marion Blakemore, our second cousins, who are still living in the Mow Cop area.
Dad's birthplace, Rose Cottage (now called 12 Mow Cop Road) was then a tiny 3-roomed house.
